  • He had a very troubled childhood. His early childhood was shadowed by the war in the country.
  • His hometown, Slavonski Brod (on the border with Bosnia) came under immediate attack during Bosnian War in 1992.
  • After the war, Mario’s family fled to Ditzingen (near Stuttgart), Germany.
  • He fell in love with football in Germany. He joined a local youth team, TSF Ditzingen when he was just 6 years old.
  • In 1996, his family was denied to extend its stay in Germany and had to return back to Yugoslavia.
  • His talent then brought him to the Croatian capital, and he joined NK Zagreb.
  • In the summer of 2007, he was bought by the Croatian powerhouse Dinamo Zagreb. He finished his first season in the club with 12 goals and 11 assists in 29 matches.
  • On 10 September 2008, Mandzukic scored his first goal for Croatia.
  • On 14 July 2010, Mario signed for the German club, VfL Wolfsburg. In his two years at the club, he scored 20 goals in 56 matches for the club.
